The Green Gun

Gun safety, politics, & perspective from a Libertarian leaning environmentalist. The purpose of this blog is to shed more light on the subject of safe & legal gun use in the USA with the aim of dispelling much of the fear that surrounds guns & gun ownership by those who are not familiar with firearms.

Handgun Drills

Once one takes on the responsibility of owning a handgun and learning the necessary laws, it's time to start thinking about practicing with it.

So, here is a page dedicated to handgun drills.

Most of these drills involve the use of snap caps, which are dummy bullets with a spring in them that prevent the firing pin from being damaged when you pull the trigger without a live round in the chamber. If you're going to do drills, buy some snap caps. The last thing you want is to break your firing pin and not find out until you really need it.

I wonder if ordinary citizens should be able to obtain this.

The DREAD Weapon system?

Should ordinary citizens be allowed to own one? Keep in mind Jim, that an ordinary citizen is the guy who designed and built it.

Then I guess the question remains: should ordinary citizens be allowed to own this?

(Then again, the Manhattan Project was not run by ordinary citizens -- only the best and brightest.)

Btw...

I still completely agree with you on the gun rights issue. In fact, I am becoming more-and-more libertarian, partially because of your positive influence. Thanks for that.

Jim, I guess what I'm getting at with this is that there are trade offs to both sides of the argument.

Would we be squashing the ingenuity of individuals working on their own to come up with dynamic solutions? Recall that the AK-47 was also, strangely enough, produced mostly by a lone Russian who wanted to help his country defeat the NAZIs in the 40's.

Whereas things like the Manhattan project, or the designing of tanks, generally falls to Government sponsored research or competition between engineering corporations. I have no problem with such organizations limiting the spread of their invention. You know, copyright law and such. ;)

As far as Nuclear weapons proliferation and such, I have no qualms with it being highly regulated. I don't really have a logical reason for believing so though, mostly an emotional one, although I'm sure a good logical argument for the regulation could be made. On a tangent, I am in favor of allowing countries to develop and use Nuclear Power for environmental reasons, as I think it's a far cleaner fuel source than fossil fuels.

In the case of the DREAD Weapon system, the weight of the weapon makes it a deterrent to the wood be 7-11 robber or school shooting mass murderer. The damn weapon weighs 28 pounds. Plus since it falls under full-auto, it would be regulated by the existing machine gun laws. i.e. FBI background checks, licensing fees, transfer fees, etc These things keep these items still legal for those citizens that want their expensive toys.

What I want to insure is that we allow breathing room for inventors, otherwise our military will be stuck with the damn M16 rifle for ever.
